Cascade Female Factory and Rivulet walk

The "Cascades Female Factory" is a great day trip to do. It is worth doing the Rivulet walk then going through the Factory and finishing off at Cascade Brewery or come back to Jam Packed for Lunch ( on a scooter!)

It's hard to imagine, the some 7000 women who spent time imprisoned there between 1828 and 1856.

Even though most of the factory was demolished over the years, in more recent times, the site was conserved and is now listed on a world heritage list.

It was about segregation, control, silence and punishment. A house of "correction".

The women were expected to work for often up to 12 hours of labouring per day - including laundering sheets and clothing in cold water.

The nursery, with babies born to women in incarceration, housed up to 88 women and 150 children. There was a huge list of all the babies and children who had died there, Mortality rates 4 times higher than in the wider community.

The persistence, resilience and strength that these women developed through all they endured is great.

Some tips:

  1. Make sure your mobile/cell phone is charged well – the audio tours require their use

  2. Go on a dry day as much of it is outdoors, failing that – have an umbrella at the ready! Likewise dress for the weather as much of it is outdoors.

  3. Bring your earphones so you can properly hear the audio for each area and not hear everyone elses.

  4. We suggest that you do the tours to give you a full idea of what life was like at the factory.

It is located in South Hobart, not even 10 minutes from Hobart CBD.

Hours: daily 9AM – 5PM, with regular tours throughout the day.

Site Entry Tickets (including audio guide):

Adult $25 Concession $10 Child $10 Family $60

Experience this 5.1-km out-and-back trail near Sandy Bay, Tasmania. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 13 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of the day.

You can do this walk and incorporate a visit to the Cascade Women's Factory and have lunch at the Cascade Brewery Best to book! Also, you should do the CAscade brewery tour. It is very good.
